So Long, For Now: We’re Hibernating for the Winter

Here’s what that means.

Dear readers,

Cartoon nerds! Lend us your ears, as we’re here to communicate some exciting, albeit temporarily bittersweet, news: The Dot and Line will be going on a soft hiatus for a few months while we regroup to get bigger and better. Here’s the rundown:

What does this mean?

The Dot and Line will effectively run as The Dot and Lite for the next few months. We’ll publish any outstanding pieces or breaking news items on an occasional basis, but we will not be accepting any more submissions until further notice, nor will we be publishing with any regularity until the spring.

Why is this happening?

We’ve been running with a small, all-volunteer staff for a long time, and with a fairly busy publication schedule. As such, we’ve yet to find time to regroup and make The Dot and Line everything we’d love it to be and more. When we first launched this site in February of 2016, we promised we’d be the best place for animation writing on the internet, period. We’re close! But we’re not quite there. So we’re taking a few months to take a step back and overhaul our operations and business model. We’re serious about the art we cover, and we want to publish the best possible writing about that art. In order to do that, we’ve determined we need to evolve to our next form.

We’ll see you next spring! | ‘Animaniacs’

What will that next form look like?

We’ve got a ton of ideas about that, but we don’t know everything for certain yet. It will certainly involve a newsletter, a new and prettier site, and a fundraising effort.

When will we return?

Spring 2019 is our targeted relaunch date. If you’d like to receive updates on our progress and sign up for our impending newsletter, click here.

Anything else?

This obviously isn’t the end, but we thought it’d be appropriate to thank you all. You — readers, writers, advisors, critics, and friends who have contributed, in ways big and small, to this site looking so damn good and being so damn fun to edit and write for every week — are the reason The Dot and Line site is what it is. You’re the reason we’re getting more interviews with animation’s best and brightest, more recognition across the web, and bigger scoops month by month. We’re grateful for you every day and every night — even on those all-nighters right before a big package drops.

Whether you’ve written for us or read every one of our stories or just endured our digital our presence while we’ve debated the merits of BoJack Horseman or Cowboy Bebop or Steven Universe, thank you so much. We couldn’t have gotten this far without you, and we’re eager to do you proud with D+L 2.0, ideally with you all by our sides. In the meantime, if you have feedback — on anything related to our site — we’d love to hear it!

But for now, stay tuned and stay gold.

Yours,

Eric Vilas-Boas (EVB) + John Maher (JHM), editors of The Dot and Line
