Among the slew of animation news coming out of Annecy, France, this week—two new movies from Genndy Tartakovsky! and yes, of course Jackie Chan has an animated dragon movie coming!—comes at least one true surprise: the Freeman family is back, baby!
That’s right: Aaron McGruder will return to his most beloved property, The Boondocks, in a new show reimagining the lives of Huey, Riley, and Robert Jebediah “Grandad” Freeman for the modern era. For old fans like us, this is music to the ears. We’ve had a lot of things to say about the show’s relevance in modern politics. It’s also nice to know McGruder will helm it himself, thus theoretically avoiding a repeat of the gruesome mess that was the show’s fourth season.
And for those of us wondering exactly what the new show will be like, it seems that the outrageously offensive fan favorite Uncle Ruckus will take on a new role as an “evil local government tyrant who rules fictional Woodcrest County, Maryland, with an iron fist.” Good thing that was…kinda foreshadowed on the Breakfast Club.
