Batman: The Animated Series Goes HD

The Caped Crusader marks a silver anniversary with a Blu-Ray announcement.

The final day of New York ComicCon 2017 had a lot to offer this year, including the chance to pay $295, preferably in cash, to get an autographed selfie with Mark Hamill. While I would have loved to have asked the living legend about his work as the voice of the Joker on Batman: The Animated Series, I skipped the throngs of fans queuing up with their selfie sticks and instead caught the panel celebrating the 25th anniversary of the legendary show.

The legends behind the show hosted the panel admirably. Kevin Conroy, the voice you still hear in your head as Batman (after appearances not just on Batman: The Animated Series, but also on Batman Beyond and Justice League), was present, with his vocal chords in tow. He was joined on the celebratory panel by producer Bruce Timm, producer and writer Alan Burnett, and the voice of Batgirl, Tara Strong. The discussion hit various topics, including the origin of the series itself and why it was so groundbreaking at the time.

But mainly they had one big announcement, which came at the end of the discussion, and which Warner Bros. later confirmed with an official tweet:

That’s right. Batman: The Animated Series will be remastered in high definition and released on Blu-ray in 2018. This also means that any streaming outlet carrying the show (looking at you, Amazon) will presumably also feature it in high definition as well. I can’t wait to catch that lightning bolt intro in high definition myself.
