Any BoJack Horseman fan knows that the only way to catch every little animation detail is to give each episode several close watches. But you’d be forgiven for missing a particularly blink-or-you-miss-it moment during the opening credits of Season 5’s premiere: a touching tribute to saxophonist Ralph Carney, who passed away on December 16, 2017. As Bojack stumbles through his home, Carney’s face is prominently displayed on the television screen with the dates “1956–2017.”
Carney and his nephew Patrick Carney, drummer for the Black Keys, wrote and recorded the Bojack theme song together. Carney was known for his musical talents with multiple instruments, particularly with uncommon ones, but his specialty was the clarinet and saxophone. His music could be heard on the albums of many well-known musicians and groups, such as Tom Waits, the Black Keys, St. Vincent, Elvis Costello, the B-52’s, and Allen Ginsberg.
Carney passed away after falling in his Portland, Oregon, home from head injuries he sustained. Patrick Carney announced the news of his passing on Twitter. He was 61 years old.
