How to Live Your Best Life, According to Sailor Moon’s Cast

At AnimeNYC, the largest gathering of English-language Sailor Moon voice actors were asked for advice. Here’s what they had to say.

If you weren’t at the first-ever annual AnimeNYC convention in New York City last November, you missed a momentous event in anime history — the largest gathering of English-language Sailor Moon voice actors, ever, at any convention. The panel opened with a beautiful musical number featuring music from the show, sung by Ryoko Ishida herself, who was the original singer of the Sailor Moon theme song, “Moonlight Densetsu,” and was convened in part to tout the new Blu-Ray release of Sailor Moon Crystal, Season 3.

The best part of the whole thing, though? The voice actors giving pieces of advice to their own characters for them to follow. The cast was asked, “What advice would you give the character you play?” These were their responses.

Kate Higgins (Ami/Sailor Mercury)

“I like that I’m really smart and stuff but I’m always telling people they need to to study and I need to just, you know, just chill out for a little bit.”

Sandy Fox (Chibiusa/Sailor Chibimoon)

“I would tell Chibiusa to stay true to your heart and to stay away from that older boy who wants to date you. That creepy older boy in that one episode, he’s like tall…? Yeah! Scary.”

Stephanie Sheh (Usagi/Sailor Moon)

“I would tell Usagi that she looks great and she can eat as much as she wants, and that she doesn’t need to worry about studying so much because she kinda has to save the world anyway.”

Amanda Miller (Makoto/Sailor Jupiter)

“I would tell Mako that the guys that she’s chasing after? You shouldn’t have to chase anybody that hard. You deserve someone who chases you back. You know, maybe she wants somebody who isn’t intimidated by strong girls. Scope out a Crossfit. Like, go into a Crossfit and be like, ‘Oh, these are my dudes, maybe.’ I don’t know.”

Cherami Leigh (Minako/Salor Venus)

“I would tell Venus that even though she’s the guardian of love, she doesn’t need to find love in a man to be the guardian of love. She already is, so stop saying ‘I need a boyfriend, I need to find a boyfriend,’ and being obsessed with that. That’s it!! Just love yourself, love your girls and the people you’re around. The whole trying to find love in a guy situation? Like I said, she went on two dates at once and they really didn’t respond well to being cheated on twice in the same day.”

Cristina Vee (Rei/Sailor Mars)

“I would say, before she died, she was all like, ‘I should’ve kissed Yuichiro’ but she hasn’t yet? …I would say like, ‘Girl, what are you doing?’”

Erica Mendez (Haruka/Sailor Uranus)

“I feel like Uranus would be giving me advice? So, I’ve got nothing.”

Lauren Landa (Michiru/Sailor Neptune)

“I would actually probably tell both Neptune and Uranus that even though they are concerned about the world, it’s okay to trust people, because I honestly think they have major trust issues when it comes to knowing the other guardians. So I think that’s in general and for everybody, I know you want to be careful, but it’s okay to let people in. It’s not an awful thing.”

Christine Marie Cabanos (Hotaru/Sailor Saturn)

“My advice would be therapy. There’s a lot going on inside if you know what I mean and she’s got Dad issues and a lot of stuff she has to work out.”

Christopher Niosi (Helios/Pegasus)

“Trust is actually something a theme that I feel very strongly about, especially in kids’ stories. And with Helios/Pegasus, because he was hurt—not to go too much into spoilers here—but he was hurt and therefore that forms his reason to be distrusting. As opposed to like, “Oh, we’re gonna have to find the holy grail or we’re gonna kill everybody, GUYS. [Looks around to the rest of the cast.] But in his case I would actually say, ‘When you’re ready.’ Like, don’t rush it. ‘Yes, I want you to to find someone, ‘which of course he does, that he can trust. But I think that, in a case like him, because of what he’s been through, I think it has to be like you have to come to that conclusion on your own; that you have to find that person on your own. When you meet them, you will know, and he sure did, so…”

Robbie Daymond (Mamoru/Tuxedo Mask)

“I would tell Mamoru not to be so embarrassed of that sweet butt!”
