A Cartoon Lover’s Haven Lives in Brooklyn

Are you in New York? Then go hang with our friends at “Spoons, Toons, and Booze.” You won’t regret it. Trust us.

The other day, the kind folks at SecretFormula invited us to join them for a session of their Saturday morning geek gathering, “Spoons, Toons, and Booze,” at the Nitehawk Cinema in Williamsburg. What the heck is that, you ask? We had the same question. Then we went. And reader, if you’re an ’80s or ’90s kid, it is your childhood Saturday mornings…but with booze. It features multiple bowls of sugary breakfast cereals, Cocoa Puff–infused cocktails, and a couple of trivia contests—one of which our co-founder, Eric, won handily. For two hours on the Saturday morning before Father’s Day, we got to binge four top-notch, expertly curated dad-centric kids’ cartoon classics from our youth:

  • Jem (a.k.a. Jem and the Holograms): “Father’s Day”
  • Batman: The Animated Series: “Be a Clown”
  • Merrie Melodies: “Robin Hood Daffy,” “Rabbit Seasoning,” and “Duck Dodgers in the 24½th Century”
  • Darkwing Duck: “Darkly Dawns the Duck, Pt. 2”

We’re not saying there’s not a better way to spend a Saturday morning if you’re a cartoon nerd in the Five Boroughs. We’re just saying that, if such a better way exists, we have no idea what it could possibly be.
