Last year, the nest of harassment that is Vice Dot Com published an article it ambitiously titled “A Definitive List of the Best Things to Watch While Stoned.” Its header image, as is appropriate, portrayed a cartoon. The piece, on the other hand, offered 16 suggestions — none of which were cartoons.
The problem here is obvious: this is objectively wrong! From the expressive voice work to the experimentalism inherent in the medium to the goddamn color, there really is nothing like an animated work to watch when high. (Even bad cartoons are worth it!)
There are just…so many cartoons we could recommend to watch while high — the films of Hayao Miyazaki , for instance, are perfect at any time, but are even more perfect while puffing on some Pineapple Express. However, there is one indie animator whose work seems custom-built for heads.
That would be Felix Colgrave, whose dark, visually bananas, classic-meets-experimental shorts are freaky but visually fascinating. Observe:
Exactly. But look, even the GIFs are great for weed-fueled watching.
Weird animals are a staple for both animation and high people but come on, now — this is just too on the nose. Felix’s work is so perfect for the pothead in you, it really does make you wonder what the hell the guy is smoking and where you can get it. Unfortunately, his website does not provide such information. It does, however, provide plenty to watch.
Just make sure you’re all stocked up beforehand, ya dig?
